Irrigation Pipes in Kenya | Quality HDPE

Irrigation Pipes

Agriculture in Kenya nowadays relies on irrigation to enhance sustainability in production by maximizing yield. Irrigation pipes are the main component of any irrigation system connection from water source to point of distribution on the farm.

The correct choice of irrigation pipes in Kenya promotes crop productivity by improving efficiency in distribution. Moreover, understanding irrigation pipes will save you on cost since you can easily identify and get quality durable pipes.

Types of Irrigation Pipes

HDPE Pipes

Irrigation Pipes

As the name suggests, HDPE Pipes are made from high density polythene materials which are resistant to UV radiation. These pipes are popular in water supply connections and irrigation system because of their durable nature.

Specifications

  • Manufactured from UV treated HDPE material.
  • Available in pipe diameter of 20 mm to 630 mm
  • Pressure rating of PN 6 to PN 25.
  • Used as mainline, sub-mainline or lateral pipes

PVC Pipes

  • Pipes are made from Polyvinyl Chloride material, ideal for carrying irrigation water, home or industrial applications. It can last quite a long time under good condition while in use. Often installed underground to ensure they prevent mechanical and environmental damage.

Specifications

  • pipes are designed from Polyvinyl Chloride material.
  • Available in diameters of 20 mm to 310mm.
  • PVC pipe thicknesses is from PN 6 to PN 25.
  • Also used as the mainline pipe in irrigation systems, or water connection lines.
  • Often reliable for boreholes, clean water supply and waste containment.

Delivery Pipes

Special pipes made of UV treated poly-vinyl chloride material for high pressure water supply. Also available in designs manufactured from cotton canvas material that is reinforced with internal PVC lining to waterproof it.

Specifications

  • Comes in diameter of 1 ½ to 3 inches.
  • PN10
  • Used as surface pipes
  • Can work as mainline or lateral pipes
  • Also ideal for domestic drainage uses, water conveyance and firefighting systems.

Driplines

Irrigation Pipes

Driplines are for use as the distribution pipe in drip irrigation system. Laid on the plant line to deliver water on a dropwise manner from its uniform spacing emitter holes.

Specifications

  • Made from UV treated Polyethylene material.
  • Available in diameter of 16mm.
  • Wall thickness varies; commonly 0.3mm and 0.4mm.
  • Surface installation often in beds.
  • Driplines come varies with emitter spacing. Available are 15cm, 20cm and 30cm

Rain Hose Pipes

UV treated perforated polythene pipe that produces a fine spray of water over irrigated plants.

Specifications

  • UV treated polythene pipes
  • Laser punched holes
  • Diameter.  32mm, 40mm, and 50mm
  • 0.4mm thickness
  • Works as lateral pipes on the ground surface.

Irrigation Pipe Fittings

HDPE Compression Fittings – Popular threaded fittings that connect HDPE pipes without need for welding. Designed with gasket and ring to enhance secure waterproof connection. HDPE fittings Includes Tee connector, elbow, couplings and end caps.

Drip Fittings

Connection of driplines to lateral PE pipes and dripline to dripline.

These include barbed connectors, drip valves, and end plugs that connect flexible drip lines.

PVC fittings

Driplines for connecting PVC pipes and fittings. Include ball valves, couplings, elbows, tee and end caps. Connected using special glue sealant to ensure waterproof connection.

Rain Hose Fittings

Rain hose pipe fittings include start connector, middle connector and end caps

How to Select Irrigation Pipes

Before any decision is made when planning to buy irrigation pipes and fittings, you should consider:

Method of irrigation

The pipes to use depend on the method of irrigation you desire to install. For instance, drip irrigation requires HDPE pipes and driplines while rain hose irrigation uses HDPE pipes and rain hose pipes.

Crops to irrigate

Crops determine the method of irrigation to use which in turn impacts the type of pipes to use.

Application

The place where the pipes are going to be used decides which option of pipe to choose. For example, if the pipes are to be installed in the open farms, HDPE pipes are preferred for mainline connection because they are highly durable.

Water pressure

For any irrigation system, pipes used should have pressure rating that matches the required pressure rating for effective irrigation system performance.

Farm size

The larger the area of irrigation, the larger the pipe size to use, both from the mainline connection to the laterals. This is to ensure uniform water supply, consistent pressure and discharge rates.

HDPE Pipes Prices in Kenya

HDPE Pipe prices range from KES 1,700 to KES 40,000 depending on the size of the pipe required.

Which Pipes are Best for Drip Irrigation?

HDPE and dripline pipes. HDPE pipes are the best for mainline connection in drip irrigation systems. Dripline or drip tapes are the main pipe applied in crop root zone irrigation. PVC pipes can be used in place of HDPE, but they are not as durable as HDPE pipes.

Advantages of HDPE Pipes over Other Irrigation Pipes

Highly durable: HDPE pipes are more durable compared to PVC pipes

High flexibility: the design of HDPE pipe makes them more flexible thus it is easier to pack, transport and install.

UV resistance: not affected by weather conditions or sunlight conditions.

Withstand high pressure: broad or high wall thickness and are thus resistant to high water pressure flow.

Durability: they last for more years, up to 50 years while still in good condition.

Versatile: works well for a wide range of uses from water supply, farm water conveyance or industrial uses.

Corrosion resistance: does not react with water, chemicals or other compounds hence making them best for irrigation.

Abrasion resistance: smooth inner surface that prevents friction which may reduce water pressure.
