What are the Features of Seedling Trays?
Seedling Trays are plastic trays
Made of plastic polymer materials which is best for moisture exposure.
UV additive
The nature of plastic seedling tray material contains UV additives essential for preventing harmful UV radiation.
Non-Corrosive
As common to plastic polymers, seedling trays are unreactive to water or air conditions.
Resistance
Are not affected by outside conditions or exposure to sunlight and extremely cold conditions.
Versatile Use
According to several research, Seedling Trays can propagate a variety of different plants.
Environment Friendly
The seedling tray plastic material does not pollute the environment and can be recycled after use.
How to Propagate Seeds in Trays
- Start by breaking the 5kg cocopeat blocks to fine cocopeat dust.
- Remove the coconut fibers and place the coconut dust to a bucket.
- Add around 20 liters of water to soak the cocopeat.
- Add calcium nitrate to the dissolved cocopeat to remove salts.
- Wash thoroughly and pour off the water.
- Leave the cocopeat blocks to drain water till it is moist.
- Fill the seedling trays with moist cocopeat and ensure that it covers more than half the cells.
- Plant 1 or 2 seedlings depending on the plant on each cell.
- Cover the seeds using light cocopeat to ensure faster germination and growth.
- Water the trays using smooth irrigation methods like misters, foggers, or hand cans.
- Place the seedling trays on a secure structure such as a shade house or greenhouse.
Seedling Tray Propagation Vs Normal Bed Planting
Raising seedlings in trays is a modern way and most commonly requires a special type of growing substance known as cocopeat. With seedling trays, you use cocopeat on each tray cell and raise 1-2 seedlings per cell. Because trays are kept in protected areas unlike beds, they cannot be affected by soil infections or harsh weather conditions.
On the contrary, Normal bed propagation or the traditional way of raising seedlings often is ineffective. The propagation in open field beds results in a low seedling maturity rate due to exposure to sunlight and excess rains. Most seedlings wilt and face an imbalance in growth due to weeds and diseases or pests.
Which is Better: Trays or Traditional Bed Propagation?
Seedling trays are more effective than normal propagation in traditional seedling beds. There is a very minimal risk of seedlings attracting diseases as compared to planting in soil which can be often infected. For example, soil may be affected by diseases such as Fusarium.
Trays are also a highly economical way to propagate seedlings due to their cheap cost and efficiency which saves from loss.
Seedling trays prevent excessive watering which can result in a slow growth of your seedlings.
Advantages of Seedling Trays in Kenya
With seedling trays, you find it easier to start seedlings. Once you have the seeds ready, you need cocopeat and you are set.
Seeds germinate faster: Provided you are growing certified and viable seeds; you will experience a faster germination rate.
Complete Seedling Count Maturity: Due to proper germination conditions and optimal provisions of seedling trays, all seeds germinate and mature.
Cost Reduction: If you compare the cost of preparing beds and the risks it has to seedling propagation, trays are economical. Trays use less cocopeat to fill the entire cells and thus better.
